there are many things i dislike about hunting down friends in order exact the necessary pressure to keep them in line. but of all of the hardships that i endure, ringing out the woolen socks is particularly unpleasant. i thought it quite amusing and amateurish of magadh to post his location in the baltics when clearly he was in the region of the white sea. not much gets beyond my reach, but this time the fella is lucky he did--his team of german gunthers were quick enough to whisk him away in a u-boat leaving me hip deep in the fridged waters of northern russia, furiously shaking my fist in the air. one thing we can agree upon is that magadh suffers from an unusal amount of luck.
speaking of luck, all of our wishes were deceived earlier this week when gavin was not present at training. while unlucky for the timbers and the timbers faithful, our luck does not compare to gavin's. it is inconceivable that anyone could retain a his position at the club given the results since spencer got the sack. but still he is there, talking to the press. this time he chipper and positive and clearly avoiding the issues suffered by the timbers. as we all know, the season so far has come down to luck and luck alone. in a different season, with different circumstances, with a different manager and a different general manager, things may have just worked out. even when speaking about the frustrations of this recent road trip, gavin stated
I think that as you start to look over the season and you have seventeen games on the road, a good number of points to pick up on the road...That is the ambition for next season and that is what you have got to look at, in all honesty. If we had those performances on the road it would have been a lot better.
We had a couple miserable performances on the road, but you start to look at San Jose, look at Salt Lake, and they are decent performances.
i have heard doublespeak before. i have read doublespeak before. that load of malarkey you just read is doublespeak. try to pick out exactly what gavin intends to impart within that statement. i dare you. not only does he disguise the truth, he deliberately uses and misrepresents the facts in order to fit his agenda. he literally denies the reality of the season only to use it as an example of what should have been done this last year in order to prove that he can turn things around and that the team is making progress.
magadh is one fella who is well equipped with orwellian doublespeak. he often attempts to defend the indefensible and that is what gavin is attempting to do here. we know the season has been dire and that the road form has been particularly offensive in the realm of stench, but suggesting that the san jose and the real salt lake games were decent performances is like saying the spanish inquisition would be a fun experience. yet there is gavin claiming first that if the timbers could have put together good performances on the road things would have been different, which is an obvious DUH! but then he continues with the zinger, stating the last two implosions on the road were respectable and were the type of performances needed to take something from the 17 road matches they failed to take something from this season. that makes complete sense. i am sold.
as i suggested in an earlier post, now that gavin no longer has excuses or players or anything other than his designs used to build this team to blame for the side's inability to produce, he has had to defend the indefensible. the sad thing is his efforts are rather transparent. though he does continue with his attempts at making lies sound truthful, theft respectable, and claiming the side has matured wonderfully and will soon be a full-bodied merlot, there is a distinct inability to disguise the facts of 2012.
which is why we here at the axe have been taking measure to begin our work towards next season. we are asking questions of our readers and of our friends and of our enemies and of anyone who may have an opinion regarding the timbers or football in general. we are doing this because as a daily blog the months following san jose at home will be intensely long as we try to find tidbits of news about what is happening within the timbers camp.
one thing is certain is that very few spots on that roster are safe. this is a very good thing. as you know i am an advocate of the advantages destruction provides a side that has experienced a season like 2012. considering the talent levels in the squad, improvements can be made throughout the team. and to that end the management will bring in new bodies and trialists over the next few weeks in order to compare their abilities with current members within the squad. i like this idea, but without a true eye for talent standing on the sidelines to assess the talent levels of the new players i fear we may see more of the same.
i expect i will be back tomorrow with a few pre-game thoughts before the dc united match. but for now, i am off to an undisclosed location to set up a blind in anticipation of magadh's saturday arrival and his pre-game drivel.
